Art and Soul

Dance for children with disabilities, built around expression, joy and a calm place to try.

Saying with movement what words can't

Art and Soul is the studio's dance offering for children with disabilities. The idea behind it, laid out in the studio's April 2025 blog post, is that artistic expression lets a child show thoughts and feelings that words sometimes can't carry.

Dance does that with the whole body. A child who finds traditional art forms hard can channel emotion through movement, and find freedom and joy in each step. Christian music and stories give that expression a spiritual home as well.

Room to try, free of pressure to be perfect

The studio's advice to parents is to make art a space without judgment, where mistakes are steps in learning and the value is in the creative act itself, not only the end result.

Every child's learning difference is different, whether it is dyslexia, ADHD or something else, so the first step is understanding the specific challenges your child faces. That is why we invite parents to call before a first class.

Senses first, and joy above all

For many children, sensory experiences are the way in: varied textures, soothing sounds, music that moves them. The blog post recommends this multisensory approach to keep a child engaged and to enrich the creative experience.

The measure of a class like this is not a polished routine. It is a child who wants to come back, who feels safe, and who is celebrated for the joy of making something new.

Start with a phone call

There is no published schedule for Art and Soul. Call (517) 759-5554 and talk with the instructor about your child first: what your child enjoys, what tends to be hard, and what a good first class would look like.

New students at any of our three studios, Haslett, Okemos and Grand Ledge, can take a free trial class. Ask whether that fits your child. You can also write through the contact page, and the About page tells you who we are and why we teach.
