Acro · Tumbling

Acro

Balance, strength and flexibility taught as a progression, so a cartwheel or a bridge is earned before it is attempted.

Strength and flexibility come before the tricks

The usual way acro goes wrong is a dancer trying a skill her shoulders, core or back are not ready to hold. Good acro teaching is a ladder: flexibility and strength work come first, and the skills sit on top of them.

Jewelry and loose hair are a real hazard once a dancer is upside down, which is why the dress code asks for hair pulled back securely and no jewelry at all.

How an acro class runs at our three studios

Acro 1 is the starting level and Acro 2 is the next step. Acro 1 meets on Tuesdays at Haslett and Okemos. Acro 2 meets on Thursday afternoons at Haslett and Okemos, and on Monday evenings at Grand Ledge for preteens and teens.

Dancers work barefoot in form-fitting attire with their hair back, so the teacher can see shoulders, hips and knees line up.

Balance that carries into jazz and lyrical

The control a dancer builds in acro shows up in everything else: steadier turns, cleaner leaps, more confidence on the floor. Acro 2 on a Thursday afternoon sits right beside Ballet 2 and Jazz 2 at Haslett, so a dancer can stack classes on one trip.

Friday Strength & Conditioning at Haslett adds the conditioning side, and new students are welcome to take a free trial class before signing up.
